For our dress, we drew inspiration from the multiple layers of the nuclear envelope that the RNA granules must transverse to escape the nucleus (see cartoon illustration). We have decided to create a two layered dress with the underlying layer representing the nuclear lamina, which is a mesh-like structure made up of overlapping filaments (see cartoon illustration). To create this underlayer in the dress we have come up with a pattern to drive a laser-cutting machine. This pattern was partially generated using scanning EM images of the nuclear lamina. The second layer of the dress will be sheer, thus allowing one to see the, “lamina” underlayer. In addition the outer sheer fabric will be custom printed with a pattern generated using a 2D image of the nuclear periphery of a nucleus actively undergoing nuclear envelop budding.
